About
Hi, I’m Lorrie
I’m a lover of beauty, fashion, style and chocolate and I’m proud to admit over the age of 50.
Diet and exercise for years has always been a love-hate relationship. I have tried so many diets, some worked well and were successful, and others were simply not for me. Some diets made sense and were easy to follow and others, well you know, like you, I just didn’t get it.
The gym has never been my best friend. I don’t mind working out once I’m there, but I can always come up with a “too busy” excuse to do something else.
My weight, I loved it until my late 20’s. That’s when I started having kids. After that, my weight was like a yo-yo…sometimes up, other times down, and yes it all related to what was happening in my life at the time.
At the age of 40 I found out I had type 2 diabetes. It was then I realized that my weight and eating habits were totally out of control. Actually my life was out of control, with just so many things going on both good and bad, I didn’t realize I wasn’t taking care of me. My weight at the time was 190lbs ( but i’m only 4’10).
I knew I needed to do something to get myself back on track.
My first attempt a dieting
I had a party to attend in a week. Nothing fit. I went to the store to try on dresses and it was so depressing. It felt like I tried on 100 dresses and nothing looked right. I left the department store and went to Weight Watchers.
I arrived at Weight Watchers just in time to sign up and sit in the meeting. Everything they said made sense and I just thought, to myself, “I’ve got this!”. I felt that I didn’t need to attend a meeting and hear people talk about their problems with food because in my mind I didn’t have a problem with food, I just needed watch what I ate and i’d be fine.
Two weeks later, I attended that party in a dress I hated and my weight had not changed.
My Second Diet Attempt
The next day at work, a co-worker was talking about how she lost 10 pounds in 7 days. It was called the Cabbage Soup diet. I asked her to share it with me and thought it would at least give my weight goal a kick start then I’ll take it from there.
The Cabbage Soup Diet- day 1 –
Fruit: Eat all the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.
I didn’t make it to day 2 – I didn’t want to see another bowl of soup or piece of fruit. All I wanted was fried chicken, potatoes salad and chocolate cake. But wait, I forgot, I’m type 2 diabetic and taking pills to control my blood sugar level, so instead I had grilled chicken, spinach, mashed potatoes and a mini chocolate cupcake and I’ll admit it wasn’t the most balanced day of eating in my life, but at that moment after nothing but soup and fruit the day previous, it felt good.
What I learned
I didn’t plan ahead so I ate more than the diet or plan required.
I became very picky about foods, as a result, my substitutes were not great choices.
I would binge on “free food” days. How crazy huh? To eat as though food a scarcity.
Grocery shopping was a challenge because for some reason, I went when hungry and no written list to keep me on track.
Exercise became a chore and I gave myself multiple excuses to not do it.
What I do right now
I plan my daily meals.
I work at making better choices.
I exercise (movement is good for the body).
Cooking keeps me focused on what I choose to eat and love making great dishes while create my own awesome recipes.
My love of fashion is strong, I dress for my body type and work the trends into my wardrobe.
I am progressing and loving the results by keeping the weight off.
I no longer take pills for type 2 diabetes because I put myself first
My attitude is positive and my appreciation of life is beautiful
